15.40 Identifying and overcoming the challenges to optimising the roll-out of FTTH

To date, very little time has been spent analysing the best way to roll out fibre optics efficiently within end users’ homes. Thus, many questions have arisen that have not yet been answered satisfactorily:

  • How can we deal with the time issue?
  • How can we avoid high maintenance costs in the long-term?
  • How can we best respond to the diverse needs of all our end-users?

The challenges of “the last metres” still have to be overcome. It will require innovative approaches, which will have to be realised in close co-operation between the network provider and the suppliers. In this presentation, we will examine the new challenges that will result from Fibre to the Home and discuss how to respond to them. In doing so, not only will we understand today’s questions around Fibre to the Home, but also create a sense of urgency in adapting to emerging needs.
